&&The pump down switch, a 1/2 HP float switch (contacts are normally open) is used for emptying in high level alarm applications, and the pump up switch, a 1/2 HP Float switch (contacts are normally closed) is used for filing in low level alarm applications. Both have a high impact grey PVC float housing and a SPW flexible CPE rubber (chlorinated polyethylene) 14 gauge 2 conduct cable. The 90 degree switching differential is mechanically activated with snap action contact, and is not sensitive to rotation or turbulence. The non-mercury float is safe for potable water. The operating temperature is 0 to 140 degrees F. Float switches are commonly used for liquid level control or alarming in applications such as sump pumps, holding tanks, sewage ejectors, effluent pumping tanks and other water and wastewater applications. They float on top of liquid such as water or sewage and activate at the installed set point. A pump switch directly switches electrical power to the pump.

&&The 1/2 HP float switches, both pump down and up, meet the terms of heading 90.32 which provides for automatic regulating or controlling instruments and apparatus. Guidance is provided by the Explanatory Notes to that heading, which state, in relevant part:&&&&“In accordance with Note 7 to the Chapter, this heading covers in part; (A) Instruments and apparatus for automatically controlling the flow, level, pressure or other variables of liquids or gases, or for automatically controlling temperature, whether or not their operation depends on an electrical phenomenon which varies according to the factor to be automatically controlled, which are designed to bring this factor to, and maintain it at, a desired value, stabilised against disturbances, by constantly or periodically measuring its actual value.&&&&Part (I) provides guidance in the classification of instruments and apparatus for automatically controlling the flow, level, pressure or other variables of liquids or gases, or for automatically controlling temperature, It states that Automatic control apparatus for liquids or gases and apparatus for automatically controlling temperature form part of complete automatic control systems and consist essentially of the following devices :&&&&(A) A device for measuring the variable to be controlled (pressure or level in a tank, temperature in a room, etc.); in some cases, a simple device which is sensitive to changes in the variable (metal or bi-metal rod, chamber or bellows containing an expanding liquid, float, etc.) may be used instead of a measuring device.&&&&(B) A control device which compares the measured value with the desired value and actuates the device described in (C) below accordingly, and&&&&(C) A starting, stopping or operating device.&&&&Apparatus for automatically controlling liquids or gases or temperature, within the meaning of Note 7 (a) to this Chapter, consists of these three devices forming a single entity or in accordance with Note 3 to this Chapter, a functional unit.&&&&Some instruments and apparatus do not incorporate devices which compare the measured value with the desired value. They are directly activated by means of a switch, e.g., when the predetermined value is reached. This group includes inter alia: (B) Level regulators or controllers for the automatic control of a level. In the float-type level controller, the float acts on a diaphragm or a magnetic or other device which operates an electric switch; this in turn switches on or off a pump, a valve, etc”.&&
